This Year’s Comeback “Caged In” Review

Originally forming back in 2014, This Year’s Comeback has been on the rise in the local scene for quite some time now as an alternative band from Toms River, New Jersey.  Not only is the band characterized by the new, unique alternative/pop-punk sound they bring to scene, but by their explosive stage presence whenever they perform live. With their new album, Far From Fine, A Garden State Tragedy,  due out sometime in June and their new music video for their new single titled, “Caged In,” OUT TOMORROW May 4, 2018 this band has a lot to look forward to in their future.

Immediately, the introduction to This Year’s Comeback’s new single, “Caged In,”  made it hard for me not to feel excited to listen to the rest, as the strumming of the first few chords left with me with great anticipation for what was to come.  I knew right away this was going to be a great summertime release and a song people could easily blast with the windows rolled down, on a hot summer day while speeding down the parkway and I WAS RIGHT.  This song is the definition of HYPE. “Caged In,” is truly a sound-defining single for This Year’s Comeback and it is the perfect first release off their soon-to-be-released album, Far From Fine, A Garden State Tragedy.

Not only is the single extremely catchy, but one of the first exciting characteristics I found in, “Caged In,” was all of the guitar work throughout the song.  From the beginning, to the solo, to the very end of the song both guitars build all of the suspense and compliment the lead vocals to give them the edge they need, making this single one to not be overlooked in the slightest.  SECOND, the vocals on this track are INSANE. Between not only leader singer, Brian Matthew’s stand out vocal lines, but the gang vocals could cause you to melt to the floor because they are placed so perfectly in the chorus and where necessary throughout the song.

One of the things I always pick up on first when listening to a song for the first time, are the lyrics.  For me, I couldn’t help but think of, “Caged In,” as quite anthem-esque, as Brian sings,”… I’ll never be anything but that awkward kid, who didn’t quite fit in.  It’s an accomplishment.” Talk about relatable. Perhaps an anthem for all of those awkward kids out there? (Me being one of them too, of course). The lyrics behind this single are powerful and are bound to catch on as this single starts to rise to the surface of the local scene.   It’s like I can hear the crowd screaming the lyrics back at the band now, they are bound to catch on to the ears of listeners quick.

If, “Caged In,” is not on repeat and in your summer playlist, you’re wrong.  It is definitely a MUST LISTEN to song and be sure to check it out when the music video is released tomorrow May 4, 2018, as well as This Year’s Comeback’s new album, Far From Fine, A Garden State Tragedy, which is due out sometime in June.
